Pay Per Lead vs Pay Per Booked Appointment
Pay-per-lead is a pricing model where a business pays for every inquiry generated, regardless of quality or outcome. Pay-per-booked-appointment is a model where the business pays based on qualified prospects who actually schedule an appointment. The second model moves more of the risk — and the qualification work — to the provider.
What is pay-per-lead?
In a pay-per-lead model, a provider generates inquiries — form fills, calls, messages — and the business pays a set price for each one. The price is the same whether the lead is a perfect fit, a wrong number, or someone outside the service area.
The model is simple and predictable to budget, but it places all of the qualification and conversion burden on the business. A cheap lead that never answers the phone is not cheap.
What is pay-per-booked-appointment?
In a pay-per-booked-appointment model, the provider qualifies each prospect against agreed criteria and books the ones who qualify into a real calendar slot. The business pays based on appointments delivered, not raw inquiries.
Because the provider is paid on appointments, the provider is responsible for the quality of the prospect, the speed of the response and the scheduling — the exact parts of the process where leads usually die.
Which model fits which business?
Pay-per-lead can work for businesses with a strong internal sales process: fast response, consistent follow-up and the capacity to work volume. If that machine exists, raw leads are raw material.
Pay-per-booked-appointment tends to fit businesses where the owner or a small team is the sales process — where every unqualified lead costs scarce time, and where a calendar of real conversations is worth more than a list of names. Many businesses use both, for different services or seasons.
What should you ask before choosing a model?
The right questions are about accountability, not price:
- What exactly counts as a billable lead or appointment, and who decides?
- What qualification happens before the lead or appointment reaches you?
- How are no-shows, wrong numbers and out-of-area inquiries handled?
- Can you see the source and outcome of every opportunity you paid for?
